      52nd Regiment of Foot serves in Canada. According to his discharge papers, he served for five years in North America.

      James is “Chelsea Pensioner” who commuted his military pension forland in Canada.       Elizabeth Ormsby paid 10 shillings for carriage of sick emigrants fromOro to York.

      Kith n’ Kin suggests the Ormsbys came in 1834, but evidence above suggests that the Ormsbys arrived in 1830.

      Text of Land Petition:
      To His Excellency John Colborne, Lieutenant Governor of the Provinceof Upper Canada, Major General Commanding His Majesty’s Forcestherein.
      In Council.
      The Petition of James Ormsby. Humbly herewith. That your Petitioneris a discharged Soldier from the 52nd Regiment with a Pension of 101/2 Acres [...] as will appear by his Pension Instructions herewithenclosed that he has located upon lot no. 14 in the 12th Concession ofOro as will more? fully appear in the [?] of the [ .....] of CrownLand that he has resided upon this location upwards of three years asis attested by a certificate lodged in the [?] Office, from Mr. ? theAgent for settling that Township. He therefore humbly prays that HisExcellency will be pleased to direct the Deed to [?] for the said lot.And as is duly bound. Your Petitioner will ever pray.

      Enclosure:
      The Petitioner is returned by the [?] as located on the 10 July 1831for this East half No 14 in the 12 Concession of the Township of Oroand he having improved thereon and resided? the ? requested a ? ...may issue of it be Your Excellency’s pleasure. 25 April 1835.

      Text of Executive Council Decision:
      Praying that a Patent may [?] for the East half of Lot Number Fourteenin the Twelfth Concession of the Township of Oro for which he waslocated as a Discharged Soldier from the 52nd Regiment of Foot and onwhich he has informed the settlement Duties. Recommended.

      Served in Simcoe County Militia in 1837 Rebellion.

      1851 Canadian Census.
      Manuscripts for Oro Township no longer exist. (Libraries and ArchivesCanada)

      1857.
      According to the Story of Oro, James Ormsby was one of three cobblersworking in Oro Township in 1857. He made boots in Robertson’s Corner.

      1861 Canadian Census.
      James Ormsby, born 1783, living in Oro Township. Page 19, line 24.He is living next to his son George B. and to the Reid family.

      1871 Canadian Census.
      James Ormsby, born about 1874 in Ireland, resided in Oro Township,Simcoe North. He worked as a shoemaker. He was a member of theChurch of England (Anglican).

      “James Sr. divided the farm, giving 50 acres each to the two survivingsons.”

      In his death certificate, he is listed as pensioner. He died of oldage after ailing for years.
